Session 1: Introduction to the concepts and basic functions of GIS (3 hours)
What is GIS;
Operation on layer, e.g. zoom in / out, view to full extent, pan, display map in data view / layout view and change map scale;
Introduction to the use of basic functions in making queries such as 'to find', 'to identify' and 'to measure'; and
Creating layers and adding data on the map. |
Session 2: Creating a map with data manipulation (3 hours)
Choropleth map with data manipulation, e.g. calculation of population density;
Construction of map with charts or graphs; and
Creating a buffer zone. |
| Session 3: Geographic data available in Hong Kong (3 hours)
Types and sources of data available in Hong Kong;
Data conversion. |
| Session 4: Presentation and discussion of assignment (3 hours)
Presentation of assignment by participants individually or in groups;
Feedback from instructor and answers to participants on practical problems that might be encountered when implementing GIS in Geography lessons;
Discussion and concluding summary of topics and knowledge acquired by participants during the course. |
